Dana Summers, 59, has been the editorial cartoonist for the Orlando Sentinel for the past twenty-seven years after holding the same position with Dayton (Ohio) Journal Herald. From 1977 to 1980, he was a staff artist at the Fayetteville (N.C.) Times.
Summers’ cartoons are syndicated nationally and internationally in 350 papers by Tribune Media Services and have appeared in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, and USA Today. He is co-creator of the popular strip, “The Middletons,” with fellow cartoonist Ralph Dunagin. Summers is also the creator of the comic strip “Bound and Gagged”. He has illustrated “Run, Dog, Run”, a children’s book for young readers about the joys of running and has also drawn a cartoon panel “ Side Stitch” for Runner’s World Magazine. Recently Summers' depiction of Eunice Shriver were aired on MSNBC.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., Summers is a graduate of the Art Institute of Boston and has attended Massachusetts College of Art. He started cartooning during the 1970s, freelancing for weekly and college newspapers in Massachusetts.
Among his honors is the Citation of Excellence, twice awarded to him by the Overseas Press Club. He has been honored by the John Fischetti cartoon competition and the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi Southeast Award, which he also has won three times.
Summers and his wife, Mary Jane, are parents of three and live in Orlando.
