ATHLETE TURNED ENTREPRENEUER SARAH FISHER HITS BOOK STORES
Fisher Releases Book with Contributions from Pioneering Women in History Including Actress Ashley Judd, Legendary Racer Janet Guthrie, and Wellpoint CEO Angela Braly
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. (May 10, 2010) Sarah Fisher, owner of IZOD IndyCar Series® team, Sarah Fisher Racing (SFR), released her first book today, 99 THINGS WOMEN WISH THEY KNEW BEFORE GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THEIR DREAM JOB, through New York-based publisher Beauford Books.
"To have the chance to share some of the ups and downs that I have been through and the lessons I have learned up to this point has been a great experience," said Fisher, who this month will attempt to qualify for her ninth Indianapolis 500, the most of any female. "When I had the opportunity to be part of the 99 Series, I felt this was a perfect platform to relay some of my experiences by way of this unique approach. While I must say writing a book was a huge undertaking, I’m excited the book is finally out and that I am able to share it with all my fans."
Fisher’s book is conveniently a speed-read that gives women the knowledge and tools to broaden their careers. Peppered with quotes from other female pioneers who have made names for themselves in their respective industries, the book offers success stories and tips aimed at creating opportunities for a new generation of women leaders.
Longtime mentor and personal friend, Janet Guthrie, the first woman to qualify and compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500, who was at Fisher’s side when she launched the only female-owned IZOD IndyCar Series team in 2008, provided the Forward for the book. Fisher’s predecessor, Lyn St. James, a seven-time Indianapolis 500 starter and founder of the Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation, is also a featured contributor in the book.
"Having the opportunity to use my book as a vehicle to share advice to others not only through my eyes but through the eyes of so many other pioneering women was truly humbling," continued Fisher, whose own mother, Reba Fisher, contributed to a section of the book about raising your child to be a success. "So many pioneering women helped us put a unique spin on the book and for that, I’m very thankful."
Those women include, actress Ashley Judd, Coca-Cola marketing executive Bea Perez, LPGA tour player Jill McGill, Wellpoint CEO and Indianapolis resident Angela Braly, musician Candy Coburn, ESPN on ABC reporter Jamie Little, and NHRA Funny Car drag racer Ashley Force Hood.
Forbes magazine previewed the book saying, "Sarah gives all dreamers-women and men-a useful blueprint for success, whether finessing a corner at 200 mph or starting a business."Sporting Woman Magazine says Fisher delivers, "witty anecdotes and astute observations."The Indianapolis Star says you’ll get a, "behind-the-scenes look at the mind-boggling world of IndyCar Series racing."Player Press called the book, "Poignant and insightful."
Fisher’s book, part of a wide-ranging library of self-help mini-guides, is trademarked through the 99-Series Inc., owners of the "99 Things You Wish You Knew Before®" book series.
Fisher’s book is available for purchase through Amazon and Borders, or wherever books are sold. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway retail will also carry the book along with Maingate trackside sales on the IZOD IndyCar Series tour. The book is also available for the Kindle Reader and will soon be available for download for the iPhone and iPod touch.
The IZOD IndyCar Series only owner/driver will put her pen to rest and return to the drivers seat for the 94th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 30, 2010, which will be the 6th race of the 17-race 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series season. Fisher’s team will attempt to make their way into the field of 33 starting positions on Saturday, May 22, 2010. The race will be aired live on ABC at Noon EST on Sunday, May 30, 2010. Additional coverage will be available on IMS Radio, XM Satellite Radio Channel 145 "IndyCar Racing," along with broadcast coverage summaries available at www.indycar.com and www.sarahfisher.com.
CNN TO FEATURE ZACH VEACH SUNDAY
ATLANTA, GA (Oct. 7, 2011)—On the heels of earning his first podium result in only his second Star Mazda Championship series race as well as being named by “ESPN The Magazine” as a NEXT athlete in motorsports, 16-year-old “Mazda Road to Indy” race car driver Zach Veach will return to CNN for a national interview with the popular cable news channel, which is delivered daily to over 100 million U.S. households.
In May 2010, Veach was named to CNN’s list of “Intriguing People” and appeared on CNN’s “Headline News” that September in advance of a speaking engagement at Microsoft headquarters as part of “Amazing Kids” from around the globe.
With his appearance on NBC’s “The Today Show” in March of 2011 to release his first book, 99 THINGS TEENS WITH THE KNEW BEFORE TURNING 16, Veach reveled his battle with childhood bullying, among other things.
Earlier this month, Veach was announced as a celebrity spokesperson for the Cyber Safety Academy’s “Great American NO BULL Challenge” in addition to Dr. Oz’s daughter Zoe Oz. The anti-bullying campaign is the first youth-led program built to give students a voice on the subject of bullying.
Veach’s segment is scheduled to be part of CNN’s comprehensive October coverage of “National Bullying Prevention Month” with popular host Anderson Cooper at the forefront.
The Ohio native’s segment is scheduled to be live at 2:40 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 9, 2011 on CNN.
ZACH VEACH NOMINATED FOR TEAM USA SCHOLARSHIP
Sixteen-Year-Old Zach Veach has been nominated for prestigious award to promote the growth of American motorsports.
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA (August 2, 2011)—Team USA Scholarship officials announced Tuesday that Andretti Autosport USF2000 driver Zach Veach has been nominated as a recipient for the 2011 Team USA Scholarship. Veach and the 13 other candidates will meet with an esteemed panel of auto racing experts during this weekend’s INDYCAR events at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, which include two USF2000 races for Veach.
“It’s a huge honor to be up for the Team USA Scholarship this year,” said Veach. “Scholarships are awarded to those whose previous merits and achievements have earned it for them and to those whose potential for the future is discernable and promising. I have worked really hard to get to where I’m at in this stage of my career and know that all the other nominees have as well. I feel any one of the finalists would be a deserving winner of this prestigious opportunity.”
Veach is vying for the opportunity to contest two prestigious events in England—the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch and the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone—in October and November 2011, respectively.
The 2011 Team USA Scholarship marks the 22nd year of providing talented young Americans with the opportunity to further their careers. Founded in 1990 at a time where opportunities for young American racers were scarce, Jeremy Shaw, long-time auto racing writer and broadcaster, saw the potential to fuel young Americans for motorsport success and build the United States’ representation overseas.
"For the first time in many years, there is now a natural progression of championships that will take youngsters from karting to the top levels of racing in North America—be that the IZOD IndyCar Series, American Le Mans Series, Rolex Grand-Am or NASCAR Sprint Cup," said Team USA Scholarship founder Shaw. "The Team USA Scholarship adds an extra dimension to that ladder of progression and is proud to have support from a wide variety of partners from within the North American racing community."
Candidates are selected based on talent and future promise. The 2011 calendar has been a successful year so far for Veach both on and off the racetrack. The Stockdale, Ohio native, Veach, opened 2011 using two race wins and three pole positions to capture the inaugural Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 Winterfest Championship, collecting a cool $10,000. When the USF2000 National Championship season started in late March 2011, Veach opened the season winning from the pole position to set the precedent for his season to come. Thus far, he has earned three pole positions, a race win and five top-five finishes and sits second in series’ points heading into this weekend’s Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge events.
Additionally, Veach has been very active in his social efforts. He continues to represent distracted driving advocacy group FocusDriven as their national spokesperson and runs a safe driving program for kids his own age. Veach has worked hard to use his unique positioning as a young race car driver to be a role model to his peers. In March he published his first book 99 THINGS TEENS WISH THEY KNEW BEFORE TURNING 16 as a supplement to his efforts, with an appearance on NBC’s The Today Show. Further, Veach was the youngest member of a panel who spoke to key constituents in Washington, D.C. in April 2011 on Capital Hill as part of the American Health Association’s annual celebration of National Public Health Week, where Veach spoke on distracted driving and bullying prevention. This high profile event followed Veach’s participation in the National Distracted Driving Summit alongside Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood.
Named one of CNN’s “Intriguing People,” nominated for the Sports Illustrated “Sports Kid of the Year” award in 2010 and showcased as a NEXT athlete by ESPN The Magazine in 2011, Veach’s efforts have been well documented by national media. In addition to his appearances on The Today Show and CNN’s Headline News, Veach has also appeared on Oprah Radio’s The Gayle King Show, C-SPAN, and in the pages of USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, iPhone iLife Magazine, ABCnews.com, and AOL, to name a few.
All of these efforts are considered as Team USA decides who is best fit to represent the United States with this opportunity.
“The significance of the Team USA Scholarship goes so far beyond the value,” continued Veach. “While it is a means to fund your racers like myself, it is moreover a means to provide opportunities to potentially revolutionize a career. America puts up significantly less racers than many other countries of the world and I’d be honored with the opportunity to present my country through this opportunity.”
Past Team USA Scholarship winners include, Jimmy Vasser, who won the first Team USA Scholarship in 1990, Bryan Herta, Buddy Rice, A.J. Allmendinger, Joey Hand, Andy Lally, Bryan Sellers, Charlie Kimball, J.R. Hildebrand, Conor Daly and Josef Newgarden.
Team USA Scholarship winners are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. For more information, please visit www.TeamUSAScholarship.org.
